From overlooked to leadership
I recently collaborated with Sarita, a 32-year-old business analyst who approached me after witnessing a colleague get promoted to a position they didn't even realise was available, a role they would have eagerly pursued.
Upon seeking my guidance, Sarita expressed frustration, anger, and a strong inclination to quit her job, fearing that her continual discussion of the situation was wearing thin on her friends.
Through multiple sessions, we delved into the specifics of what had occurred and clarified Sarita's career objectives. It became apparent that she hesitated to communicate her disappointment to her boss regarding the promotions of others and struggled to articulate her own aspirations and capabilities for advancement.
Together, we addressed the narratives Sarita held about challenging her older, more senior boss. By reframing her perspective, she gained the confidence to engage in a constructive dialogue with her boss, who was unaware of Sarita's career aspirations. Subsequently, they devised a plan for her career progression.
Sarita chose to remain with the company and is now on a trajectory toward a senior leadership role. She acquired tools to acknowledge and explore her emotions, recognising their value as guiding signals. Prior to our sessions, she viewed feelings as burdens to suppress rather than useful indicators.
