You are what you consume
Imagine if we chose the stories we consumed with the same consideration we choose the things that we eat!
The world would be a different place and instead of having to start with helping my clients detangle themselves from unhelp narratives that belonged to someone else I could go straight to helping them choose the narrative that will nourish them most and propel them to achieve their own goals.
If food fuels our physical bodies, stories fuel our minds.
If you’re interested in trying out how a healthy diet of stories can help you, I’ve got a few tips to help you choose what you consume.
🤔 Limit your choices:
There are so many voices each with their own messages but too many messages become noise. Limiting the number of people you are listening to will help you get the most out of each message. For example I have a max of 3 teachers at a time on any topic, this includes podcasts, in person work, books and any other ways you consume information. My current business guides are Laetitia Andrac, Shannon Stone and Guy Kawasaki via his podcast Remarkable People
🌍 Diversify Your Sources:
While limiting the number of voices you listen to is important to avoid overwhelming yourself, it's also valuable to have a variety of perspectives. Seek sources from different backgrounds, cultures, and viewpoints. This diversity can enrich your mental diet, offering you a broader range of ideas and experiences.
💡Find what makes you feel:
If stories are fuel for your mind you want to make sure you are filling yourself up with the premium kind. Have you ever noticed how particular stories make you feel? Can you name the genre of stories that you like? If not, take some time to notice when you are feeling a particular way and what story is playing in your mind to make you feel it. Caring about how you feel is the key to choosing the fuel that you need.
🎭Balance Entertainment and Learning:
Just as with food, it's essential to strike a balance between indulgent stories for entertainment and educational content. Mix in stories that entertain and stories that inform, as both have their place in a well-rounded mental diet.
🗣️Share and Discuss: Engage in discussions with others about the stories you've consumed. Sharing your thoughts and hearing different perspectives can deepen your understanding and create a sense of community around the stories you love.
Consumption isn’t only about what you put in your mouth, the stories that you consume are as important as the food that you eat.
