Counselling FAQ

What is counselling?

Counselling is a place fully dedicated to you and your needs, it’s a place where you can come to explore any problems that you are having difficulty navigating, it’s like a trip to the gym but instead of your body we work out your mind.

My approach works best with people who are ready to put in some work in order to see change, you have probably already started this work, you’ve read the self help books, listened to the podcasts but it’s not quite sticking so you know it’s time for some extra assistance.

During our time together we will explore any concerns you are having and shift your focus away from problems and towards solutions. Taking you from surviving to thriving.

How will counselling help me?

There is plenty of practical help out there, like what to write in your resume, how to answer interview questions and what format your CV should be in, which is super helpful but can be a short term solution. Taking some time to work through your emotional blocks will help you move forward faster than any other work you do. Counselling is a place to understand yourself better without judgement or the need to change, the things you learn in counselling will change your view of yourself forever, it really is the best path to ensuring you secure a great job that you love and value.

What can you expect when you attend your first session?

The first session is all about getting to know each other, we’ll spend the time exploring your reasons for coming to counselling. I’ll ask you questions like “what made you want to come to counselling?” “What challenges are you facing as a migrant in Australia?” “What would the ideal version of you look like?” “What made you want to come to Australia?”

You’ll leave the session knowing that you have been heard, knowing that someone is standing behind you to help with the heavy lifting and a sense of clarity about what step you need to take next.

What will the counselling experience be like for you?

Everything is open for discussion, some of the things we might cover include, work struggles, identity issues, experiences of racism and the many other experiences you might have faced or are currently facing. It’s up to you what we talk about how deep we dive in.

The process starts by collaboratively identifying the issue that you would most like to work on, we will then move on to examine how the way you are viewing this issue works against you so we can then try out different ways of reframing it so you can move past the issue towards freedom.

What makes someone a perfect match for working with me?

If you are someone who is self aware, ready to take responsibility for your own life, happy to invest time and energy into the process of counselling and ready to face anything that might come up during our time together we will be a great fit.

How will you feel when you leave?

You’ll leave feeling a little lighter and with the sense that things can be different.

You might be a little tired (emotions can be heavy to lift) so make sure you don’t have to rush to your next task after our session.

I’d encourage you to make sure you have a soft place to land after each session, you might want to reach out to a supportive friend, visit your favourite place or take time to just be.

What happens at the end of the first session?

At the end of our first session we will make a plan about moving forward. We will determine things like how frequently you should attend, the time of day that works best for you and mode of meeting (via video or in person) and then book you in for the next session.

What should you do if you have questions?

If you have any other questions it’s best to shoot me an email hellokatrinaj@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can (usually with 24 hours)
